Sinopse
Os 50 anos de expansão americana para o oeste, entre as décadas de 1830 e 1880, são analisados através das experiências das famílias Prescott e Rawlings: migram pelo Canal Erie, atravessam as pradarias a partir de St. Louis durante a corrida do ouro na Califórnia, sofrem com a Guerra Civil e, finalmente, ajudam a construir as ferrovias nas planícies e a levar a lei e a justiça à fronteira. Ao longo do caminho, encontram homens das montanhas, viajam de carroça, lidam com nativos americanos e enfrentam foras da lei no sudoeste.
